About the Northern Lights

The northern lights; the polar lights; the aurora borealis  - a phenomenon by any other name would still be as awe-inspiring. The top entry of many a bucket list, seeing the northern lights in person is truly an experience like no other.

Once upon a time, the northern lights were attributed with magical properties, incorporated into folk tales of Nordic gods or said to predict victory in battle. It’s easy to see why - glittering in green against a dark night’s sky, they do emit a sense of other-worldliness.

Today, thanks to scientific advancement, we can better understand the true cause behind this ethereal light display. The sun emits a constant stream of charged particles known as solar wind, most of which is deflected by Earth’s magnetic field. At the poles, however, the field is at its weakest, and some particles slip through. When these collide with gas particles in Earth’s atmosphere, the reaction manifests itself in the dancing display of colors that we’ve come to know as the northern lights.

The Experience

To get the best view of the northern lights, you need to escape the light pollution of the town. Our guides will lead you by dog sled to our remote Honest Greenland cabins, set amongst the countryside where you’ll have the best opportunity to see the lights at their brightest. Along the way, you’ll follow a route decided by the guide on the day according to recent and expected light activity.

Spend the night star-gazing and await the appearance of the lights with baited breath. After an evening of wonderment, fall asleep surrounded by nature ahead of your return to Aasiaat town center the following day.
