Midnight Sun Sailing
Float under the bright night sky.
About the Midnight Sun

A phenomenon unique to the world’s polar regions, the “midnight sun” shines strongest in June and July, although never-ending sunset tones continue to light Aasiaat’s sky well in to August and September. The occurrence has inspired wonderment amongst its observers since it was first documented by Greek explorer Pytheas in around 322 B.C., who reported the arctic to be, “a land where at the solstice the night no longer exists.”
During the peak season, the sun stays fixed at its highest point in the sky, and locals describe a sense of rejuvenated energy brought on by this seemingly eternal sunlight. Visitors often comment on the unexpected tranquility found in the small hours of the morning, when the sky remains awake while the town sleeps. But you won’t be the only inhabitants up and about – Aasiaat’s wildlife makes the most of the bright nights by putting on lively displays. Whales flick their tales out of the water and native arctic terns soar overhead, chirping their recognizable song.
The Experience

You’ll set sail out of Aasiaat bay shortly before midnight, giving you time to find the perfect spot to see in the new day. In the peak of summer, the sun beams as brightly as you’d expect at noon, while in the earlier and later days of the season, dusk merges straight into dawn.
With two hours to explore the waters, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to whale watch, spot icebergs or even go fishing if you choose. You can tailor your own itinerary or let the guide lead the way as you sit back and relax.
