About Kayaking

Kayaking is one of northern Greenland’s most popular attractions – particularly in areas such as Aasiaat where the waters offer so much to be explored. And in a land with few roads and an abundance of islands, they also represent a practical means of transport for local people.

The tradition can be traced back to Greenland’s umiaks, which have a history we can date back to 1000 A.D. Used by the Thule people on hunting expeditions, the earliest models would have been constructed from animal bones and stretched walrus or seal skin, coated with natural animal oils for waterproofing. Today, modernized versions are still utilized by hunters in the north, although closed-top kayaks are often favored by smaller parties.

In their use in everything from tour expeditions to subsistence hunting, kayaks provide a link that connects the Kalaallit ancestors of old with the inhabitants of today, as well as the visitors from overseas.

The Experience

Before you start, our experienced kayak guides will give you a safety briefing and make sure you’re comfortable with the equipment. Then it’s time to set off for the tour of a lifetime. As you paddle through the bay, you’ll likely encounter some of Aasiaat’s most famous residents in the water – whales!

Itineraries vary depending on individual guests, party sizes and ability levels. Let your guide know if you have any special interests and they’ll tailor a route just for you. You might choose to take a trip to one of Greenland’s famous icebergs, or perhaps to drink water directly from the area’s hot spring.

Extend your adventure for two or more days and sleep under the stars along the route. Freedom camping is allowed throughout Disko Bay, and our guide will pick out the perfect spot for you to set up camp for the night.
