Kaffeemik

Experience community life in Aasiaat
About Kaffeemik

Traditionally a means to celebrate events in the Greenlandic people’s lives, Kaffeemik is the coming together of friends, family and neighbours to share in joy and conversation over cakes, coffee and the traditional fish soup.  The Greenlandic peoples have always gathered together throughout their history, however the Kaffeemik is a more recent development, starting around World War II when American soldiers were stationed in Greenland and the people welcomed them and their cakes into their homes as well.

The community of Aasiaat being only 3,100 implies all the more welcoming and friendly each Kaffeemik can be.  Travelers to Aasiaat can experience something authentically Greenlandic when they are welcomed into someone’s home to enjoy life with them and their friends.

The Experience

Be greeted in a warm, truly Greenlandic home by the sweet smells of cakes, comforting scent of coffee and hearty aroma of a traditional fish soup.  Surround yourself in friendly smiles and chatter of a group of locals as you experience an honest slice of Greenland.  Your host Sørine is a well-known and loved member of the arts and theatre community in Aasiaat, who will gladly tell you tales of Aasiaat’s culture or often have members of the dance community join you and show you an example of Greenland’s famous drum dance.

Join us in one of Greenland’s beautifully coloured houses for as long as you need to sample not just cakes and soup but a real piece of Aasiaat as you are embraced into the hearts of the locals.
