About Igloos

Ever wondered if you have what it takes to truly tackle the elements? For the Greenlandic hunters of old, the ultimate test of endurance was a night spent outdoors in the unforgiving northern winter. In order to survive, these ancient hunters were forced to use strength, creativity and ingenuity to create shelter using the limited resources available in the wild.

And so, the igloo was born -  the name derived from the Inuit word “iglu”, meaning house. Historically, igloos were most frequently employed by the Thule people of Greenland, who created semi-permanent villages as well as temporary hunting camps.

The unique structure of the igloo incorporates a raised sleeping area that ensures heat is held in the areas where it’s needed most. Inside, a flame lantern both provides essential light and heat, and causes the interiors walls to melt slightly and then refreeze – strengthening the overall structure. These techniques, imagined by ancestors of long ago, pay testament to early human innovation.

The Experience

You’ll begin with a tutorial on igloo building to familiarise you with the process, and then it’s time to get to work. Our local guides will help you cut your own ice blocks and shovel your way through snow as you work together using a combination of traditional techniques and more modern tools.

Once you’ve finished, it’s time to really put your craftsmanship to the test with an opportunity to sleep inside your igloo. Of course we recommend taking plenty of layers, but you’ll also find that your igloo holds in body heat to give you a surprisingly warm and comfortable night’s sleep. But don’t just take our word for it - experience the astonishing phenomenon for yourself!
