About Ice Fishing

Ever wondered how the inhabitants of an island nature survive the harsh arctic winter? Ice fishing is a sport born of necessity, employed by Greenland’s earliest inhabitants to find essential sustenance during the winter months.

Today, fish remains a vital part of both the national economy and local kitchens. New techniques have been developed over time, although the objective remains the same. Spears became hooks became fishing rods, and the efficient technology now used to cut holes in the ice makes quick work of what would once have been an arduous task However, even today cutting holes in a frozen lake is risky business, and essential know-how has been passed down through generations.

The Experience

Wrap up warm, because you’ll be heading out by dog sled to find the best location for fishing. Our dogs make quick work of traversing the frozen lake, and before long you’ll arrive at the optimum fishing spot. Our experienced guide will first show you how to create a hole in the ice and then assist you in setting up your equipment.

While you wait for your prey to bite, take in the majestic surroundings. With snow-capped mountains, frozen waters and wide open plains to admire in every direction, the conditions are perfect for quiet reflection as well as providing rare insight into day-to-day Inuit life.
