Dog Sledding

Take in the majestic scenery of Aasiaat on a ride unlike any other.
About Dog Sledding

The practice of dog sledding dates back more than 5000 years, used by ancient hunters to traverse long distances in search of sustenance. While modern technology has rendered the practice obsolete in many more populous areas, it is still very much a part of everyday life in northern Greenlandic towns such as Aasiaat. When the lakes freeze over during the winter and boats are unable to sail, it remains the primary form of transport for local hunters.

Greenland dogs, while similar to huskies, are their own unique breed, renowned for their strength and speed. They are well equipped for Aasiaat’s harsh winter conditions and thrive in a pack structure, but require expert training and strong leadership.

The relationship between mushers and their dogs is of the utmost importance. Dogs are considered humans’ equals and treated with respect and gratitude for the vital work they carry out. During the winter months, the dogs live together in packs in the town. In the summer, when the weather is too hot for sledding, they are transported to what’s known as “Dog Island”, where they can roam free and are regularly visited by their mushers.

The Experience

Join one of our experienced local mushers for a ride you’ll never forget. Sit aboard a wooden sleigh, lined with reindeer fur to keep you warm, and make sure you hold on tight – our dogs love to run and can hit some high speeds!

As you race across Aasiaat’s stunning snowscape, you’ll get a glimpse of the everyday life of Inuit hunters, who regularly make this very same journey and by the very same means. You’ll cover around 15km with the opportunity to stop and take pictures along the way, and to ask your guide questions about the dogs, the scenery and local life. For just 200 DKK pp extra we will take you further out to experience Aasiaat's renowned Hot Springs where you can enjoy this natural wonder which has been a source of vitality to the local people for millennia!

At the end of your journey, you’ll return to our starting point to get warmed up over a steaming cup of hot Greenlandic tea. A magical experience from start to finish!
